A 5 day split is a workout routine where you split your weekly training into 5 days, typically splitting each workout session into a different muscle group. The first 5 days you train the following muscle groups, the second 5 days for the next muscle group and so on.
This is a great way to avoid soreness and to maximize your recovery. Here is an easy formula to figure out the optimal time to split your training into each muscle group:
Maxuteal phase: Week 1-9 – Legs, Biceps, Triceps, Shoulders
Maximal contraction phase: Week 10-16 – Back, Abs, Triceps, Forearms
Taper: Week 17-24 – Rest
Maintain the 5 day split during your first 5 days, then split again for the remaining 6 days of your split. The goal is to complete each muscle group on the same day for as long as possible. By maintaining the same split throughout your split, you are not adding extra weeks of recovery.
If you train twice per week, split each muscle group 6 times. For example, I would split Leg, Biceps, Triceps, Chest, and Abs, and do 3 sets of 8 muscle groups. That’s 6 sets of 8 muscle groups, with 4 sets of 8 working for each muscle group.
Here are a couple other ways you can split your workouts and still make time for protein.
