Overview & Quick Tips

The Belgrade Fortress was built as a defensive structure and it was used during the period from the 2nd to the 18th century. It is settled on a ridge overlooking the confluence of the Sava and the Danube rivers. Today, the fortress is a unique museum of Belgrade's history, and its complex is made up of the Belgrade Fortress (consisting of the Upper and Lower Town), and the Kalemegdan Park which surrounds the fortress and is one of the most beautiful and the most famous parks in Belgrade.

Detailed information

If you you find yourself in Belgrade, there will be plenty to do, but one thing that everyone would probably take you first will be the Belgrade Fortress and Kalemegdan – the park that surrounds it. The city itself has a long and rich history, and the same goes with the fortress, which was first built in the 2nd century, overlooking the confluence of the Danube and the Sava. The whole fortress and the park offer a lot to photograph, but in this tip I will stick to the part of the fortress where the Victor monument is placed. The Victor is considered to be the symbol of Belgrade, and the view from the plateau where it is placed is truly wonderful.

When to come – when it comes to the time of day, I would recommend coming during sunset, since the view at this time is the most wonderful to capture. Alternatively, you can come during the evening and photograph the night cityscape of this lively city. When the time of year is concerned, you can cam anytime. The fortress is always accessible, and every time of year has its beauties and unique features suitable for photographing. But if I had to choose one period of the year, I would choose fall.

What to photograph – first, as I already mentioned, the sunsets are wonderful from this place, and are probably the most common motif photographed from here by both the tourists and the locals. The forest, the city and two rivers can be seen from this point, so they can also provide a lot to capture. Next, the Victor monument looks magnificent, especially if photographed in contrast to the setting Sun. Lastly, since the fortress is made of stone and very old, there are plenty of details around which you may also find interesting to photograph.

Equipment – since this is the place ideal for photographing cityscape, I would recommend a wide-angle lens above all. Try capturing the Victor monument and the cityscape in one image, you are certainly going to achieve great result. Then, since there is so much to see from the fortress when you look down, it might also not be bad to bring a long zoom lens as well, since many interesting details can be seen from above and you may want to fit them within a tighter frame. Also, you could use a prime lens if you want to capture details around you, such as stone walls or the plants growing out of stones. For the photo of the stones I provided, I used a 50 mm prime lens. Last, but not least, you will need a tripod. Since the view is the best at late afternoon hours or in the evening, you will certainly need the support for your camera in order to be able to pull off long exposure shots. It may also come in handy if you want to capture several images in a row in order to create panorama afterwards, because this place is ideal for such images.
