Overview & Quick Tips
Beli kamen (in English "White Stone") Lake is a former marl quarry that used to belong to the Beočin cement factory. After the mine was exhausted in the '80s of the previous century, the water started filling the lake. After 25 years, the lake has reached the depth from 6 to 57 meters, and the water level continues to rise. Today the lake attracts people from many surrounding towns and cities.Detailed information
It can be said that Beli kamen Lake is a gift of nature created in cooperation with people. Ever since the quarry was abandoned, the pit has been filled with water and it has created a marvelous lake, which today attracts those who want to find refreshment in hot summer days while surrounded by surrealistic combination of stone and vegetation. At the same time, green-turquoise color of the lake in contrast with the white-yellowish rocks that surround it attracts those who want to take beautiful photos.
Safety tips – water level can go from 6 meters to as deep as 57 meters, and the level of water is constantly on the rise. There are paths around the lake suitable for walking and safe for taking photos, but approaching the lake itself is possible from only a few places. If you want to go for a swim, you should know that it is officially not allowed, but many people still swim there every summer. Visit the lake when it is sunny and dry in order to avoid muddy and slippery surfaces. If you plan to swim in the lake, make sure to protect your equipment from dust and water.
What to capture – the lake and its surroundings are very unusual, pleasant to the eye and they provide a sense of isolation from the urban, fast-paced world. You can take photos of the overall scene by using a wide-angle lens or creating a panorama from several images. If you are lucky enough to have a few clouds in the sky, the whole scene can look unrealistically beautiful. Depending on the time of day, the color of the lake varies from light-blue in the morning hours to green in the afternoon.
If you like creating portraits, this surrounding can be interesting as a background setting. And of course, the vegetation is rich enough to capture the nature’s details and textures here and there.
Equipment – first of all, I would say that a wide-angle lens is a must at this place, or at least a kit lens that covers wide angle too. If you want to take photos in order to create panorama, which is also suitable to do here, you will also need a tripod. A prime lens such as 50 mm would not be bad to bring along as well, especially if you plan to capture portraits.
Extra tip – when the temperature is too high, usually during July and August, there can really be a lot of people by the lake. Even though the atmosphere is fun, it makes taking photos a bit difficult if you want to focus on the surroundings and nature. However, it can be a good opportunity for creating interesting portraits and candid photos, so set your priorities before you decide when to come. Whatever your decision may be, you will surely have enough to capture, while also having a good time.
