Overview & Quick Tips
Family fun with 3-D interactive art! The Art in Paradise venues are large, indoor galleries with murals carefully elongated to appear 3-dimensional. The idea is to photograph your friends within the paintings. It’s great fun! There are 3 venues in Thailand—Bangkok, Pattaya and Chiang Mai—each has a different display.Detailed information
—Take a friend or two, the more theatrical the better! Don’t go alone, it just wont’ be as fun!
—Avoid weekends and school holidays. The less people when you visit the better.
—Avoid using a flash. The paintings are glossy—light from a flash will bounce off the murals and create overexposed reflections.
—To brighten your shots, use a wide aperture and crank up the ISO.
—How’s the face? I needed to frequently overexpose my photos by 1 stop to prevent my companions facial features appearing too dark.
—Bring a fast, wide angle lens. 18mm is a good focal length to capture the large scenes. Still, you don’t need to frame an entire mural to take a fun shot. A close-up will also work well in-front of some murals.
—Position carefully. Floor markings help locate prime spots for shooting, but you’ll need to adjust a little depending on your height and focal length. The 3D illusion depends on positioning correctly for perspective.
-A tripod is not necessary. I brought mine along but didn’t use it. I found it quicker and less bother to adjust my position shooting held-held. And I didn’t want to annoy the visitors waiting to in line to take their turn in-front of a painting.
—Beside each mural, you’ll find sample shots with different shooting angles and funny poses. Take a look for cool ideas.
—Make sure the painted scene fill your entire frame. A jungle scene will loose realism if it abruptly turns into a blank wall at the edge of your photo. Alternatively, crop your pictures later.
-Use photoshop or other software when you get home to darken unwanted reflections and hide lines where walls and floors meet. ‘Clone Stamp’ and ‘burn’ worked for me.
—Have fun! How could you not!
